More commonly known as the 6 Pounder this British 57mm Anti Tank gun was the primary British anti tank gun in the middle of WWII as well as being used on a number of tanks.
The 6 Pounder first saw service in North Africa in 1942 replacing the earlier 2 Pounder anti tank gun. 6 Pounders were supplied to Royal Artillery anti tank regiments of infantry and armoured divisions on the basis of 4 battaries with 12 guns each. By the later stages in the war as 6 Pounders were being replace by 17 Pounders in anti tank units they were then allocated as six gun anti tank platoons attached to infantry divisions.
Early action was successful with the 6 pounder being capable of taking on most German tanks. However within a year as the Tiger I and Panther entered service, the 6 pounder was ineffective against their frontal armour although could still do damage from other angles.
6 Pounders were also used by the US (designated 57mm Gun M1) as well as many Commonwealth countries that fought alongside the British. The 6 Pounder continued in service as an infantry weapon until 1960.
